In a vibrant display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, Osu Manhea Basic School in Accra hosted a notable tree planting event on Saturday, June 8, 2024. Organized to commemorate World Environment Day, the initiative brought together a diverse group of participants including representatives from the Ocean Governance Research and Development Team, Women in Water Sanitation and Climate Change, Tullow Oil, Eni Ghana, Modec, Plastic Punch, school staff, students, and local community members and many others.
The primary objective of the event was to bolster the Green Ghana Agenda by enhancing local biodiversity and promoting sustainable environmental practices. Various species of trees were planted around the school premises, marking a significant step towards mitigating climate change and fostering ecological balance.
The day began early at 6:00 AM, with enthusiastic participants gathering at Osu Manhea Basic School. Under the guidance of experts and volunteers from collaborating organizations, attendees engaged in hands-on tree planting activities. Participants eagerly took part in digging holes and carefully planting saplings, thereby learning firsthand about the importance of environmental conservation.
Headmistress Mrs. Adwoa Baidoo expressed her gratitude for the community support and emphasized the school’s commitment to nurturing the newly planted trees. She highlighted the educational value of the event, noting how it provided students with practical lessons in environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Prof. F.K.E Nunoo, representing the Ocean Governance Research and Development Team, stressed the event’s broader significance. “Today’s initiative not only contributes to local biodiversity but also underscores the collective responsibility we have towards safeguarding our environment,” he remarked.
